Drinking water Problem takes the edge off …………..
Long back, there was a tube-well in Ongarada- one of the tribal villages coming under Khorsanda GP of Paralakhemundi (Gosani) Block of Gajapati District. It is very interesting that the water from the tube-well was bubbling up automatically due to the capillary force from the ground level. In the village, there is no other source of water except the tube-well, which was being used for drinking and cooking purpose. But the water of the tube-well was not so safe rather contaminated with iron and zinc smell, which often causes for normal and abnormal-water borne diseases.
CCD took the matter as a great concern, decided to design the water resource base and constructed a water reservoir storing the water in the tank. The water tank is connected with two taps and a platform at the beneath of the tank for bathing purpose with appropriate use and management of water. The surplus water of the tank is being connected with the corn fields. The water stored in the tank, purified lagging behind the sediments in the bottom of the tank and utilized for drinking and cooking purpose. Now there are no health hazards in the village. Simultaneously, the people are utilizing the surplus water flow for growing up the vegetable and the seasonal paddy crops with effective management of water. The long standing problems of the people are solved now elevating the ways for all purposes. “We are very thankful to CCD for its noble efforts in mitigating our problems opening the vistas for safe drinking water facilities and now we have realized the value of water - elixir of life. “ A Quote from the villagers”.

Konneipur is a tribal village of Kujasing Panchayat in the Gumma Block. 25 nos. families are residing in this village. CCD promoted a Self-Help Group namely Sarala Mahila Sangam in the year 2000 including the entire household. Earlier they were unaware of the utility of pallisabha and gramsabha. They hardly ever attended the pallisabha and gramsabha. During a SHG meeting the women discussed the issues related to agriculture. There is a checkdam in their village. But they could not utilize it's water properly. They found out that a construction of water channel would be the right solution for irrigating the non-irrigated land. They requested the project staff encouraged them to place the matter before the pallisabha. Discussion held on the activities of Grampanchayat, pallisabha and gramsabha. For the first time seven women went to palli sabha and highlight their ideas in the presence of word member and sarpanch.
All the members present their praised the idea. Recommendation of gramsabha was their next target. Laxmi Dalbehera, Vice-President and Vanu Ragas attended the Gram sabha and highlighted the issues. Finally, Gramsabha listed it in the action plan. Sarala Mahila Sangam have approached to handle the cannal work and the panchayat has forwarded the workorder in the name of Laxmi Dalbehera. A quantum of Rs. 20,000/- has been santioned for the work.
Today the community says ………. “Domain over Land and forest is our birth right”
Prior to the formation of the network, the partner community was un-aware on the existing revenue rules and have no daring to face before the Revenue Authorities placing the causes on land related issues. Even if to say, they were also ignored about the sistu (revenue tax) of the land, house and other properties. Apart from this, the community was also not aware about mutation cases, land rights, encroachment rights, partition rights, OLR Act, Regulation Act and the 17- point program of the land etc., In times of collection of the revenue taxes, the RI concern of the circle was used to exploit the innocent people imposing the exactions from the people, which were noticed while reviewing receipts issued by the authorities.
In the federation meeting, the concept on land and forest was induced in the minds of active community leaders and others of the partner community to initiate the process , filing an application to obtain the pattas, Record of Rights, filing a petition for mutation cases, partition rights as well as the other processes for the rightful possession and acquisition as per the Land Reform Act (OLR) .
As an impact of these meetings, trainings and workshops, now the tribal leaders could acquire the minimum knowledge on their rights with relating to land and forest and other domains.

Case Study 1 Iniatives drive towards better progress . . .
Munising is fortunate to have the Natural Resources and vast opportunities on the ample production of horticultural poduces. In spite of such abundance the village women are groping under poverty due to lack of proper initiations and innovative approaches towards the effective utilization of the resources. In due course of time, with the intervention of CCD the tribal women became aware on the utilization of the existing resources in a proper way and habituated in attending meetings and trainings.
Secondly, the tribal women have been facing a great problem in marketing their products at a desired profit. For their qualitative products produced by them they are not getting the fair price according to the quality. In later stage by becoming more aware of the problems faced by them they have come forward to solve the problem by their combined effort. It being a common problem they tried to find out its solution with the initiation of the staff of CCD. Hence, to lead the groups in the path of progress due importance is being given on the development of entrepreneurship. Out of the goods produced by themselves the production of turmeric is larger in quantity. Hence, the members of the group as a whole decided to establish a grinding mill for processing of turmeric powder in order to sell it at a fair price through developing the packing which will add their value. By collecting the turmeric during the period of harvesting they were getting very low income previously. Now they have taken the initiation to sell it through the value addition process. It became possible on part of them only through their continuous efforts with genuine interest coupled with self realization more.....

Case Study 1
The members of the SHG Group of Jollang Bhave taken a piece of land of about 0.50 cents for cultivation by paying an amount of Rs.10000/- on a lease basis. As per the version of the president and the secretary of the said group they took it for cultivation on an experimental basis to see whether it will yield gain or lose to them by doing this in a joint effort. At present they cannot get the clear picture of it whether, it will accrue profit to them or not. If they will get something as their own profit then to what extent or by how much after the repayment of their debt.
However, with the assistance of the male group they are sure that they will get their desired profit. They have also been assured by them in cultivation and constructing the temporary boundaries around the land in order to protect the crops or corns from the out side damage. Now the land is remained unutilized for about a period of 3 months. It had earlier been planned to do the fruit cultivation in it but in vain.
At present all have shown their keen interest to raise paddy in it. After this they will again use it for the cultivation of vegetables. They will see whether it will accrue profit to them. If it is positive in their concept they will take it to use for cultivation for a period of further 3 years more....

The works of the mahila mandals in the area are very praiseworthy and appreciable by the locality, which elevates the encouragements to the women community, involving so, in the welfare activities, in sake of public interest and betterment. The efforts of the groups in value addition of the horticulture products is being recognized by the outside market units, which would probably be open the vistas for the profitable earning to sustain the livelihood.
Fruit of the development comes out of continuous effort with self interest.
The members of the women group of the village by name Ukarsing have been working diligently for the upliftment of the group striving more to strengthen the economic base in order to stand on their own feet maintaining the economic solidarity and good working spirit. The group had been formed initially by involving the 10 members. Besides this there was also the other group which had been formed in the same village and functioning with the support of the DWCRA scheme. Hence there was a competition between these two groups. The DWCRA supported group had been flourishing with the assistance of an amount of Rs.15000/- towards the development of the group. They were moving towards the progress with the support of DWACRA with a great enthusim and spirit but with the passage of time they incurred loss in their business and their functioning of activities came to a stand still. But the group promoted with the initiation of CCD has been moving towards progress with a proper initiation and collective efforts and maintaining the harmony among the members of the group under the dynamic leader named Mammi Gomango, who could lead the group effectively promoting the economic solidarity and better working spirit among the members. One of the greatest achievement that has been made with the help of her able leadership qualities is the effective and active participation in the self governing process viz: taking active participation in the village SHG meetings, Pallisabhas and Gramasabhas conducted at village level and panchayat level. As such they are moving towards the bright side of life dispelling the darkness. New awakening is coming to their mind. Now they have well aware of their rights and duties and the provision of reservation of seats in Panchayat Raj Institutions. They can take part in the formation of the grass root level Government by taking part in the elections held for the Sarpanchas, Naib Sarpanchas, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Ward members etc. After becoming well aware of the Right to Information the said leader who was working as a animator in CCD could take the initiation of uplifting the tribal women getting realized the importance of adequate information in the developmental perspectives. Taking genuine interest in the self governing process she could able to be the Ward member of the said village. Thereafter she did not remain silent. Her silent revolution was continuing. As a result of which her continuous effort and the spirit of developmental attitude paved the way of becoming the Samiti Member. It became possible only through the conduction of village meetings and awareness building on the Right to Information and her self interest combined with self realization. After an effective mobilization the members of the women groups are following her foot prints and striving more to improve in their way of life through effective participation in Pallisabhas, Gramasabhas and SHG meetings. By this way they are able to mobilize the Government funds for the development of their groups, initiating the income generation activities revolving the funds properly thus raising their purchasing power to lead a better life.
Innovation comes out of curiosity
The story is about the initiative on the effective intervention of the INHP activities facilitating the need based services related to the community health in such a way that the fruits of the development reaches the un-reached. To materialize the dream of ensuring the better health related practices to the beneficiaries the Santimayee Mahila Mandali of Mondolosahi have come forward to play a major role in ensuring the better health practices thus promoting their health status.
To achieve the objectives of INHP they have decentralized their roles in a planned manner. For the proper execution of the works related to Nutrition & Health Day they have been divided into 3 parts to extend the cooperation for performing immunization work, distribution of THR and Health Check up work. As a result of which 90% of the beneficiaries are being covered under immunization. The greatest responsibility taken by them is ensuring the immunization to all the beneficiaries on a fixed health day. Effort has been continuing from the members of the group to facilitate the presence of all most all the beneficiaries from the different corners of the remote area and special attention is being paid to ensure the immunization in inaccessible points through an effective liaisoning with the existing medical officers. Though the PHC is being suffered from the inadequacy of staff support yet they have been mobilized to extend their support in order to offer their service for the proper coverage of immunization work. Thus ensuring the better health practices at their door step. Besides this initiation has also been taken for raising the community health fund among the women groups in order to witness the unforeseen situation faced by the women group. The kind of support extended to them are in the form of advancing loans from the community health fund with out any interest. As a result of which the needy women are utilizing the amount obtained from the fund properly. For example for meeting the expenses required for purchasing medicines for fever, institutional delivery and to meet the transportation cost required for the process of delivery. The internal loans taken by them are being repaid within a period of 6 months as per the rules prescribed therein.
Rights on House Pattas - availed
The story reveals how the people of Pottaro situated in the hilly regions of Rayagada Block have been successful in procuring the house pattas after having acknowledged about the land pattas and house pattas through the prolonged interaction with the CCD representatives. A vast majority of the people living the said village have been facing the problem of procuring the pattas in support of their legitimate claim.
The representatives of CCD detected this problem through conducting the village meetings, and paying intensive visits to the area making interaction with them on the issue based problem. Thereafter suggested to take the proper initiation regarding this from their side. As a result of which in due course of time the people of the said village tried to take the decision about this in summoning the Pallisabha where they got reflected the problem of procuring the house pattas after making a list of the non possession of pattas by the people as per the decision taken in the pallisabha. The people of the village as a whole could move towards the office of the Tahasildar filing the process - applications for the issuance of pattas. Accordingly the Tahasildar has given the direction to the R.I. concerned for the verification of the application filed and after getting the positive response from R.I. the pattas were issued to the 17 beneficiaries.
Collective decision - an outcome of collective effort
The members of the women group of Jollango of Rayagada Block are forging ahead. Effective motivation, continuous interaction with the group and regular follow up of these made the group realize their unity and integrity in strengthening their economic base thus facilitating the process to sustain their group for a longer period in order to prove themselves worthy of others expectations. As such they came forward to form a federation of their own to achieve many more things. Various developmental packages provided by the Government in the form of various schemes were not being reached at their door step. Realizing the gravity of the situation the representatives of CCD took the proper initiation on making them aware of the right to information and later on this particular effective weapon worked for the betterment of the women. They took it as a power and realized that how it served as a power after enjoying the fruit of its development.
With the passage of time they became well aware of their health condition, education and the importance of saving developing the attitude of thrift in them through attending the SHG meetings regularly conducted at village level. A lady by name Santoshi Soboro became able to participate in the three tire system of Panchayat Raj and could become the ward member of that village. It is because of the effective awareness on the rights and duties of the citizens followed by the rights and duties of PRI members and the process of taking part in the self-governing process as well as in the three tire system of Panchayat Raj which forms the Government at the grass root level through conducting the workshop on PRI with the initiation of CCD. As a result of which the other members of the group came to know about the reservation of seats for ladies in the three tire system of the Panchayat Raj. This became possible only through t he federation of the women SHGs and attending the workshop on PRI. By this way gradually, the federation members after becoming well aware of their rights, duties and getting adequate information's could choose their representatives from their group knowing their efficiency. Ms. Santoshi Soboro is one of the brilliant example who could become the Naib Sarpanch of the said village.
This gives us testimony that how a tribal women came forward to become the PRI member with the staunch support of the federation members formed by themselve
Case Study- 2
“We are also working equally………………”
This is the strong argument of Tohojung Women Association members during fighting for their equal wages.
It was during October - 2004. A check dam and a culvert was sanctioned to Tohojung villages from DRDA. This work was undertaken by a contractor from Paralakhemundi. He was paying Rs. 50/- to men and Rs. 35/- to women as daily wages. In the federation meetings and VDC meetings, CCD use to motivate the community on equal wages and to fight wherever such injustice takes place.
With this motivation, the women started fighting with the contractor for equal wages but the contractor did not agree and the work was stopped. The whole community sat together and decided not to go for work unless equal wages are paid. The contractor tried to bring the labour from another village by knowing this, the whole community went to other villages and narrated the whole problem and requested them not to join in the work. The women association also strictly warned the contractor that they will complain against the contractor for not paying the equal wages. There was a big fight between contractor and the women association members. Al last, the contractor agreed to pay the equal wages and the work was completed.
It had a greater impact on the neighbouring villages and in the area. All the women from the neighbouring villages also started fighting for the equal wages and now the equal wages are paid.
We visited Temple for the first time in our Life
As in many parts in India, the dalits of Anukunda village of Gumma Block, Gajapati, Orissa were not allowed to enter the temple. The issue was raised in the federation meeting. Several village meeting were conducted with Dalits and non-Dalits on this issue. On 2nd March 2005 the Sarpanch also participated in the meeting and was motivated enough to lend his support to end this inhuman treatment. The school teacher and other intellectuals were also invited for this meeting. At last it was agreed by the whole community of the village to allow the Dalits into the temple. On Maha Sivaratri day i.e. 0n 8 March with a festive atmosphere and devotional mood, the Dalits entered the temple and prayed to the all mighty to their heart's content for the first time.
Our Children are Not Discriminated Now
The dalit community of Anukunda village, Gumma block, Gajapati, Orissa, India is happy that now their children can sit and eat lunch with other children without any discrimination.
In this village the Dalits children were not allowed to sit together with other children. The issue was highlighted by NRMPO partner NGO to the school teacher and Sarpanch. It was also discussed during the dalit federation meeting in February 05. After thorough discussion at village and Panchayat levels, the school headmaster promised that there will not be any discrimination at the school. The village community was also informed of the discrimination of dalits through cultural shows. Slowly the community started raising their voice against social injustice and in-human treatment.
