Natural Resource Management and livelihood:
Effective management of Natural Resources is the only and best way to ensure food security and reduced poverty in the tribal as well as in the rural areas. Restoration and protection of natural resources as well as ensuring ownership rights of the community over the resources is the major concern of CCD. Land, water, forest, animal and human resources need to utilize in a sustainable manner.
Livelihood should keep a person meaningfully occupied, in a sustainable manner, with dignity.
Livelihoods, therefore, go far beyond generating income.

Sustainable livelihood promotion measures by CCD: -
Micro planning: Micro-planning is being facilitated before any intervention in respect to NRM and livelihood. The community participates in the planning process and takes responsibility to implement and own it,
Mini Project approach; These projects are implemented, monitored and evaluated by the community with active participation of men and women, PRI representatives and the Line Departments in a decentralized structure having the access and control over the resources. Funds are transferred to the CBOs after the approval of Palli Sabha, Work responsibility is shared with different sub committees/User groups.
Social Audit: Social audit is facilitated by CCD throughout the implementation and after the completion of work involving the community, PRIs and the concerned Govt Officials,
Gender perspective is integrated in all the NRM initiatives.
Soil and moister/water conservation measures: : Irrigation canals, check dams, irrigation tanks, stone bunding, earthen bunding, land leveling, plantation, wells etc are taken up in 78 villages.
Drinking water: Dirking water is a major problem in the hilly areas. even though there are perennial streams the water could not be used properly. People were climbing up 2 to 3 km. above the hills to fetch the drinking water. Specially women were the worst victims.
With the communities, CCD had several discussions on the drinking water issue. It was decided to construct gravitation flow system for drinking water. Through Mini project approach in 37 villages drinking water programme was promoted through gravitation flow. By this drinking water is at their doorstep. Especially women drudgery was reduced. Sustainable agriculture: Experimentation of new technology like Participatory technology development (PTD) is taken up in 6 villages on rain fed paddy where the yield is increased to 6 QTL to 11 QTL. The proven technology is up scaled through master farmers in other six neighboring villages. Cast study
New crop like sunflower, groundnuts, maize and other vegetable corps like tomato, brinzal, cow pie are successful in 13 villages. Almost 75 percent household have nutritious plan as kitchen garden.
Livestock: capacity building on care and management of livestock focusing small ruminants, animal health camps, promotion of Community Link Workers in the tribal areas are taken up. Case studies
Grain Banks: CCD has promoted in most of the villages where there is separate committee to store the grains to meet the food shortage in the slake seasons and to help the vulnerable communities. Case Studies
Restoration and protection: plantation in the degraded waste land is a major focus area of CCD from the beginning. Mango, Jackfruit, guava, pine apple, orange, drumstick, banana, tamarind, papaya, fodder and fire wood plantation are promoted in the barren and waste land. It has become a source of livelihood for the community.
Value addition: value addition of horticulture products and NTFP are taken in collaboration with Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT). Products like pine apple juice, jam, jelly, oshmodehydration of pine apple slices, tit bits, oshmodehydration of jack fruit slices, cashew apple juice(RTS), orange and lemon squashes, pickles, deseeded tamarind cakes, broom stick binding, leaf plate making are promoted. Market linkages: collective marketing for cashew, tamarind, jackfruit, pine apple are promoted. The linkages established with the outside traders eliminating local traders monopoly. Linkages established with OMFED for pine apple and orange juice enhancing the semi-processing skills among the women and introducing them to the market.
Skill promotion: CCD has been imparting skills to community like nursery raising, drafting, plantation, preparation of bio-compost, para vetnary, green manuring to both men and women.
Educating the people on laws related to land and forest: different IEC are taken to aware the people on laws related to land and forest. Process has been facilitated to obtain ownership rights over the occupied land resources by the community. CCD is also facilitating Effective implementation of the Provisions of PESA in its operational area.
Networking: networking with the district, state and national level organization/movements like food rights campaign, forest land rights campaign in respect to the rights of tribal.
