Process initiated by CCD
Organizational level: Staff sensitization programme were conducted inviting external resource persons. A policy decision has been taken at the organization to work with PWDs with the understanding of disability “as a human right issues rather than certification and distribution of aids and appliances”. Disability perspective has been integrated in all the projects. Steps have taken to make the office disabled friendly.
Sensitization: Awareness generation was facilitated among the disabled and non-disabled on preventative and curative measures, rights and privileges of PWDs under mental health, RCI, Equal opportunity Act 1195 and National Trust Act. CCD has facilitated school sensitization programmes, film festival on disability, sensitization workshop for Govt. officials and PRI members to sensitize the people on disability as a development issue.
Organization of PWDs: 78 Groups of PWDs are promoted at the village levels including both men and women. The leaders of the groups are provided leadership and social mobilization training. PWDs groups are federated at Gram Panchayat and District levels. Milan Disability network is the district level network of PWDs. It is a membership-based organization. The members sit on 20th of every month to discuss their matters. The network is facilitating advocacy at the district level for the effective implementation of PWD Act.
Linkages: linkages are made for obtaining certificates, aids and appliances, bus and train passes, scholarships, identity card, Job card under NREGA, pensions, housing and social security schemes. The PWDs leaders are now helping the other PWDs in accessing the provisions and privileges.
Capacity building: social mobilization training has been provided to the PWDs leaders. The president and secretary are provided training on group management. Book keeping trainings are being conducted for the educated PWDs. Trainings are also conducted to sensitize the PWDs on Acts. Exposure visits are organized to other states like Jhadakhanda, Andra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh for the network members.
Economic empowerment: Micro-credit support ranging from Rs 5,000/ to 10,000 provided to ----- numbers of PWDs to under take income generation activities. The PWDs have started PCO, petty shops, goatery, seasonal business, book store, broom making, tailoring,
Inclusive education: CCD is advocating for the inclusive education i.e. inclusion of Children with disability in the general schools. Inclusive education is more effective. It gives confidence to Children with disability to live in the society with dignity. Sensitizing parents and preparing the children are two major activities of CCD. Braille education has been started for children with visual impairment. School sensitization programme has started to sensitize the teacher as well as the non-disabled children on inclusive education.
Women with Disability: WWDs are included in the village level groups and given proper representation in the general body of Milon network. Women are being prioritized in supporting micro-credits. They are participating in all the capacity-building activities organized by CCD. Gender sensitization programme is conducted for the PWDs leaders.
